NEW YORK — Rep. Jamaal Bowman announced Wednesday that, after working with Gov. Andrew Cuomo and President Joe Biden to expand COVID-19 vaccine access in the 16th District, a federal mass vaccination center will soon open in Yonkers as part of an initiative to bring vaccines to underserved communities.

With the support of FEMA, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Defense and other federal agencies, these sites will mobilize federal clinical and non-clinical staff and contractors who will work with the National Guard, New York State, local leaders and community based organizations to establish and operate these sites.

“We’re proud that our team was able to work with the federal government and Governor to bring a mass vaccination site to our district. We will act urgently to ensure an equitable vaccination rollout to all of our constituents,” Bowman said. “Our district was the state’s original epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak and is still dealing with the devastating effects today, which have disproportionately impacted seniors as well as Black and Latino communities. In Westchester County, 171 out of 100,000 Black residents have died, compared to 89 out of every 100,000 across the county as a whole. The Bronx saw the highest deaths in seniors at 3,726 seniors’ lives lost. Today’s announcement is one of many crucial steps to defeating the virus.”

The Yonkers vaccination site — one of four new community-based centers outside New York City — will vaccinate approximately 1,000 residents each day over an eight-week period. For the first two weeks, appointments will be limited to individuals living in the ZIP code where the site is located and surrounding communities.

The site is currently under development and opening dates and hours of operation will be made available in the coming days. The Yonkers vaccination site will be located at:

New York National Guard Armory

2 Quincy Place

Yonkers, NY 10701

Since his swearing-in to Congress less than two months ago, Rep. Bowman has made equitable vaccine access in the district and nationwide a central priority, joining colleagues to advocate for the restoration

of the National Vaccine Program Office and calling on President Joe Biden to scale up vaccine distribution to New York State.
