New York – Today, Congressman Jamaal Bowman, Ed.D. (NY-16) joined President Biden at the White House in support of actions to advance gun control which include new regulations to track and curb ghost guns and nominating Steve Dettelbach to serve as Director of The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
“Gun violence is an epidemic in our communities and we must work to end it now,” said Congressman Jamaal Bowman Ed.D. “Today President Biden announced that we will begin regulating untraceable ‘ghost guns’ more by requiring sellers and resellers to place serial numbers on the home-assembled weapons. The President’s executive action today, which fulfills one of the steps I outlined in a recent letter to his administration to address gun violence, is absolutely essential given the prevalence of ghost guns used in instances of gun violence. In New York we’ve seen the purchase and sale of ghost guns skyrocket and oftentimes these guns reach our communities from across state lines. We must bring gun trafficking to an end to protect our streets and save our youth who are far too often the victims of gun violence. President Biden is leading our nation in the right direction by reducing the number of guns on our streets and nominating Steve Dettelbach to be Director of ATF. Last month I wrote a letter to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell calling for him and his Republican colleagues to join Senate Democrats to pass common sense gun law reform. These bills have passed the House with bipartisan support, but have been blocked by Senate Republicans. My heart pains every time I join neighbors in NY-16 to grieve another person lost to gun violence. As a nation, we are grieving those we’ve lost to gun violence and we need proactive steps in place now to prevent anymore friends, children, parents, cousins, aunts, uncles and loved ones from being taken away before their time by another bullet. Today, we are one step closer to comprehensive gun violence prevention which is necessary for healing.
