Week of Healing and Reflection
Dear neighbor,
Gun safety and ending violence in our community is a top priority for our district. This week, I led a Week of Healing to collaborate with all levels of government in our state and district to highling how we can bring an end to violence and trauma. In order to do that, I led a series of initiatives this week with my colleagues in Congress, and with elected officials and community members right here in New York. I want to let you know about my journey of healing our streets - learn more below.
Healing Resolution - I introduced a National Day of Healing resolution with Representatives Karen Bass (D-CA), Cori Bush (D-MO), and Bobby Rush (D-IL) to designate May 18 as a National Day of Healing. To learn more click here.
Governor Hochul Partnership - I joined Governor Hochul to announce $6.2 million in grants to expand community and hospital-based violence intervention and an additional $100,000 in new funding for local organizations doing the work to end violence and substance use in our communities. View a recording of that event here.
Community Conversations - Lastly, I met with community members impacted by violence to discuss what healing looks like for them. I also convened local elected officials and community members alike to learn about the CARES Program at Mt. Sinai Hospital where our youth are receiving a quality education and holistic support to end cycles of violence and trauma. This program can be a model for many of our schools.
We can collectively transform our communities to make them safe, nurturing environments. I hope you join me in that effort and consider steps to actively heal yourself, your immediate circle and our community at large.
Best,
Congressman Jamaal Bowman
