Service Academy Nominations
Thank you for your interest in the United States Service Academies. As your Representative, each year I have the privilege of nominating up to ten individuals for each vacant academy slot allotted to New York’s 16th Congressional District.
Nominations for the 2024-2025 academic year are complete. If you would like to be considered for a nomination to a service academy for the 2025-2026 academic year, please complete our application by October 4, 2024. Interviews will be scheduled in the middle of October 2024. If you have any questions, reach out to our office at ServiceAcademy.Bowman@mail.house.gov.
An appointment to a Service Academy is a distinct and rare honor. Acceptance of an academy appointment requires at least a nine-year service obligation, including four years at an academy and five years of active duty service. Members of Congress are authorized by law to nominate candidates for appointment to four U.S. service academies.
These schools are the:
-
Military Academy West Point (USMA)
-
Naval Academy (USNA)
-
Air Force Academy (USAFA)
-
Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA)
-
Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) Does NOT require a congressional nomination for appointment
Although it is an essential component of the appointment process, a congressional nomination does not guarantee an individual’s admission or appointment to a service academy. In addition to securing a nomination, a candidate must also submit an application packet and fulfill other service academy requirements. Even when a candidate meets all these requirements and is deemed to be qualified for admission, he or she may not receive an official appointment, due to the limited number of spaces available at each service academy. Each candidate is required to participate in an interview with our Service Academy Committee, composed of former graduates of the program.
