NEWS: Congressman Jamaal Bowman Speaks with Migrants Across Westchester About Their Needs
For Immediate Release
Westchester, NY — Yesterday, Congressman Jamaal Bowman, Ed.D. (NY-16) visited migrants at emergency housing sites at hotels in Yonkers and Ardsley to discuss how government agencies and the community can best support them. Rep. Bowman went to the Ramada Inn and the Ardsley Acres Hotel Court to hear directly from migrants about their stories, struggles, and needs.
“As I spoke to asylum seekers and migrants throughout Westchester today, it was clear that these are people who are just trying to make the best of extremely challenging circumstances,” said Congressman Bowman. “They have endured violence, persecution, and poverty, and are doing everything it takes to look after themselves and their families. We should welcome our new neighbors with open arms and give them the care and assistance they need to thrive. This means providing legal assistance, childcare, and mental health support, as well as expediting work visas so asylum seekers and migrants can support their families. Immigrants contribute so much and bring joy to our communities, and it’s our responsibility to make sure they have their needs met and know where to turn for help.”
“I want to thank the many organizations that have stepped in and provided food, transportation, healthcare, English as a second language services, and love to the new migrants in New York. We need to work together and improve coordination between our communities, as well as city and state agencies to get the best outcomes for migrants. I’m excited to see how over the next few months we come together to support each and every one of our new community members.”
