NEWS: REP. BOWMAN STATEMENT ON SCOTUS DECISION TO REJECT INDEPENDENT STATE LEGISLATURE THEORY
For Immediate Release
WASHINGTON, D.C — Today, the Supreme Court of the United States released their 6-3 decision rejecting the dangerous independent state legislature theory and ruling that states do not have unilateral authority over election law for federal elections.
Congressman Jamaal Bowman released the following statement in response:
“This morning, the Supreme Court made the responsible decision to protect our democracy by rejecting the extremist independent state legislature theory. This dangerous idea would contradict 200 years of precedent by giving state legislators unchecked power to continue racially discriminatory gerrymandering and pass voting laws that disenfranchise Black voters across the country. This case was a power grab by extremist Republicans on a crusade to silence Black voices. The fascists trying to undermine our democracy will not succeed. Fair and equitable voting laws are the bedrock of our democratic values, and we must continue to protect and expand access to the ballot box, especially for historically disenfranchised communities.”
