NEWS: Rep. Jamaal Bowman Joins Community in Mourning Amidst Gun Prevalence Near Schools

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today,  Congressman Jamaal Bowman, Ed.D (NY-16) issued the following statement in response to recent passings and a firearm found near Webster Ave School.

“We cannot continue to let guns have a hold on our communities,”  said Congressman Jamaal Bowman, Ed.D (NY-16). “On Tuesday I was informed that a gun was found just a few feet away from Webster Calhoun Playground. While I am thankful for the swift action of Webster Ave School staff that moved students to safety, and the New Rochelle Police Department that investigated and removed the firearm - I am pained that our community is plagued by guns on our streets that constantly interrupt or end our children’s lives.”

“Knowing this, our community continues to grieve the loss of Julian Oliveros who was killed senselessly in January.  We are also now mourning the loss of James Caldwell Jr. who was tragically killed last Wednesday in broad daylight. James Caldwell Jr., aka Boogie Nation, was an upcoming rapper who continuously reached back to uplift all of those around him. He was well respected, admired and a bridge builder between the city of New Rochelle and young men with mentorship, opportunities, and community support. I extend my sincerest condolences to the Oliverso family, Caldwell family and all neighbors throughout NY-16 who are grieving these tremendous losses.”

“It has and will continue to be my mission to provide our communities with the necessary resources to prevent the untimely death of our young people. I will continue to fight for stronger gun laws, combat poverty, and work to deliver tools for putting social determinants of health into action. Let's hold each other and remain steadfast because darkness will never overcome the light. We must continue to love!”
