WASHINGTON — Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) this week submitted an amendment in the House Rules Committee to the annual National Defense Authorization Act that would prohibit the U.S. military from maintaining a presence in Syria. The amendment, co-sponsored by War Powers Caucus founders Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR) and Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA), comes a week before the U.S. House of Representatives will vote on the fiscal year 2022 National Defense Authorization Act establishing the budget of the U.S. Department of Defense.

“For years, President Biden has been right in speaking out against the war in Afghanistan, and it took tremendous courage to follow through on finally ending American military intervention there,” said Rep. Bowman. “For too long, our nation’s spending priorities have been out of whack, and I believe this White House understands that it’s past time for Americans’ money to be spent building roads, schools, and businesses here at home instead of destroying them overseas. Too many Syrian lives have been lost as a result of disastrous U.S. policy, but President Biden has an incredible opportunity to demonstrate leadership once again on the global stage. I urge all of my colleagues to join me in supporting this amendment and ending the U.S. military’s intervention in Syria as quickly as possible.”
