NEWS: Rep. Bowman Passes Nearly $7.4 Million for NY-16 in Federal Appropriations Package out of the House

Washington, D.C.  -- Today, Congressman Jamaal Bowman Ed.D (NY-16) voted for the now House -passed H.R. 8294, an appropriations bill composed of six spending bills in which Congressman Bowman successfully  included $7.4 million in dedicated funding for communities in New York’s 16th Congressional District.

In May 2022, Congressman Bowman requested $26 million across 15 Community Project Funding requests for NY-16 to the U.S. House Appropriations Committee as part of the FY2023 Federal Appropriations process and package. Five of the 15 total Community Project Funding requests led by Rep. Bowman fall under the jurisdiction of H.R. 8294, while the remaining 10 other Community Project Funding requests are housed under other spending bills advanced by the Appropriations Committee that are expected to be voted on later this month.  The Senate, which is expected to release its own set of appropriations bills this summer, will need to reach agreement with the House on a final omnibus spending bill for FY2023 that can pass both chambers before it can be signed and enacted into law by President Biden. Rep. Bowman will continue to advocate for these dedicated funding investments in NY-16 as the process for annual spending  continues.

The 5 Community Project Funding Requests that Congressman Bowman advocated for and are now included in the House-passed bill H.R. 8294  are as follows:

  • $3 million to Montefiore Medical Center to expand behavioral health clinics in Westchester County Public Schools

  • $750,000 to the Village of Hastings-on-Hudson to install  geothermal heat pumps, solar panels, and improve energy efficiency at its public library and village hall

  • $750,000 to Westchester County for the necessary final stage of a rehabilitation for Yonkers’ Sewage Treatment Plant

  • $2,560,000  to Westchester County for a study of the Lake Isle Dam to promote safety, flood mitigation, and environmental justice in Southern Westchester

  • $330,054 to the Emerald Isle Immigration Center in the Bronx to expand and renovate its community facility

“We are in the middle of a climate emergency that requires our full and immediate attention at a local level and federal level,” said Congressman Jamaal Bowman Ed.D (NY-16). “Just a couple days ago our communities experienced severe flooding again because our infrastructure was not built to withstand the intense climate change we are experiencing. Thankfully, our local community members and partners have action plans that can help strengthen our communities to mitigate this climate crisis. Today the $7.4 million passed out of the House would support these efforts and strengthen our neighborhoods, streets and highways as climate resistance spaces and structures. In addition, the funding we saw passed today will help us support our youth’s mental health needs in public schools and support our neighbors who are immigrants in need of safe spaces or assistance in the immigration process. My commitment is to the people and to our planet - today I’m proud to share progress that reflects partnership with local leaders and shared commitment  to that.”
