For Immediate Release

WASHINGTON, DC – Tonight, President Biden gave his State of the Union Address to a joint session of Congress.

Congressman Jamaal Bowman, Ed.D. (NY-16) gave the following statement in response:

"From saving our democracy to ensuring that our economy works for all, President Biden’s speech addressed the most pressing issues in our nation and at the kitchen tables in NY-16. People want to see material change in their day to day lives, like the $1 billion in investments we’ve brought back to the district. This is why I am proud to have worked closely with the Biden administration to write legislation like the CHIPS and Science Act and succeed in lowering the cost of insulin to $35. His remarks also clearly demonstrated where we must continue to make progress and that our work has only begun.

I was heartened to hear President Biden call for measures to curb gun violence, protecting renters and labor rights, securing reproductive rights, enacting the American Climate Corps, and ensuring the wealthy pay their fair share in taxes–issues that I have proudly led on in Congress. His remarks on junk fees and the need to lower prescription drug prices for everyday Americans were spot on.

We welcome President Biden’s call for a 6-week ceasefire and more aid in Gaza, and what we really need is an immediate, permanent ceasefire and a way to ensure lasting peace in the region in order to stop the killing and bring our hostages home. No more kids should be killed, no more families should be separated, and no more people should starve to death.

I look forward to continuing to do this hard work with President Biden to move our country and NY-16 community forward."
